During the summer, we had the privilege of photographing the Tigers Soccer League. The day started out very cold and windy with some drizzling rain on top of that. I was worried about my studio lights which were set up on the field. Thankfully, my loving assistant (husband) was able to hold on to the light so it didn't get blown away by the wind. Unfortunately, thanks to the weather, some families didn't want to wait around for their individual shots! Well, hopefully next year around the same time, it will be a better day for people to just stick around.

Recently I have joined the NILMDTS organization to offer volunteer photography help for those who have loss their precious baby. Please read this post and tell about it to your friends and family.

NILMDTS Honors Our Babies

October is designated as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and in recognition of this we use this space each year to honor the thousands of angel babies captured in images by our affiliated photographers.

We have a number of resources for families, hospitals and our volunteer photographers available in our forum.

Thank you to the many parents who, when faced with this devastating news, have requested a NILMDTS photographer to provide heirloom portraits to remember and memorialize their babies. Thank you to the hospitals who have so graciously embraced our program, welcomed our Affiliate Photographers, and worked with us as the program has evolved. And with great gratitude we say thank you to the thousands of photographers in more than 25 countries who make this gift and this legacy possible.

Jasper Wedding

David and Samantha decided to hold their wedding nestled in the Rocky Mountains, about four hours west of Edmonton, in the little town of Jasper! What a diverse setting - every time one turns a corner, there's a new snow-capped mountain, beautiful clear lake, or raging river to delight the eyes. These two were eager to take advantage of this setting, so in between their ceremony (held at the Lobstick Lodge), and their reception (held at the Amethyst Lodge), we managed to get out to a number of eye-catching sites. Among other spots, we went to Pyramid Lake, Athabasca Falls, and the Athabasca Rivers, all which provided impressive mountainous panorama as background. This grinning couple were fine to go along to all these beautiful spots, and their happy demeanor definitely made it worth the effort to go to Jasper!

We also noticed that David bore a resemblance to a main character from the Lord of the Rings films, and are happy that he had a great sense of humour after we put together the following photos!

It was fun to explore the Rockys with you two! God bless you both in your new marriage!

Double the Fun

Back in September, I had set up for a baby photo shoot, Melissa showed up with her cousin and each of them had a baby on their arms. Daddy also come along with his Firemen's gear, so in about a couple of minutes my place was full of activity!

We started the shoot with baby Jaxson who barely fit into daddy`s helmet. Poor helmet, if you would know what happened with it... or in it. Although Jaxson didn't really like the smell of a smokey jacket, the pictures turned out great, and while he was resting I had an opportunity to take some great shots of little Zoe.

She is so much fun, I couldn't stop laughing, and neither could she. Anytime I made a noise, she was bursting with the sweetest laughter I have ever heard. Mom decided to bring her husband back next week, so we can take some family shots as well. Take a look at these great shots from those sessions.

Wedding on the Meadow

This wedding's location was a children's Bible camp, which is where both Logan and Jasmine have met and spent a lot of time in past years. Their outdoor ceremony was held at Meadowlodge Bible Camp, which is tucked into the pretty surroundings of the Cooking Lake area. After the Gospel was preached, the enthusiastically cute couple came together at the front, and were married before a delighted crowd of onlookers. This wedding had the shortest ceremony I have ever been to. Afterward, we decided to have a bit of fun with pictures of the bridal party, and got permission from a nearby camp to use their farm as a setting for them. That big red barn definitely added a unique flavour to the scenery!

Everyone looked like they had a lot of fun being photographed for the occasion, and it is especially apparent in the smiles on Logan & Jasmine's faces!

Jordan & Danielle's E. Session

Downtown Edmonton was the backdrop for my photography session with this sweet couple, who will be getting married next year. From back alleys to rooftops, this city's concrete jungle provided some great settings and ideas as we photographed this pair of lovebirds. Conditions were great on this beautiful, warm Sunday evening - the sun gave us excellent lighting options, and also it was not too busy out, except for those who were taking advantage of outdoor restaurant patios.

Jordan & Danielle are a fun outgoing couple who seemed to have a lot of fun in this unique engagement photo setting, and it really showed on their faces. Thanks so much!

Agape Love

Agape means Love in Greek, but not just love is the deeper kind of love. This word represents divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, active, volitional, and thoughtful love. No wonder why Jerry named his dental office love. They are full of fun and love for their patient. I had an amazing time capturing the staff and the beautiful decoration. I'm just into that red wall. Tracey and Her Source

I met Tracey over a year ago at her store BirthSource. She is a professional doula who opened a baby store on the east side of Edmonton. It's a very nice store with an array of unique things for babies and moms. I hung a couple of baby pictures up at her place, along with my business cards and price lists, and have been blessed with a lot of new moms and babies coming from there.

She decided that it is time for her family to take professional portraits, so they all dressed nice and headed to my studio back in September. A very nice outgoing family with a lot of passion towards each other. We had so much fun, and we tried so many different poses! I really enjoyed the photoshoot with this family.

Your store is beautiful, by the way. Keep up the good work, Tracey! I can't wait to shop there for myself someday... :)

The Allan Family at Hawrelak Park

In the fall, I had a newborn in my studio with her little sister. She had grown up so much since I last saw her. Little Ilaria looked so big and smiley, her outfit matching with her big sister as we headed to the park to play around in the bright yellow leaves.

Mackenzie loved to be outside, feed the ducks, and play in the leaves - she had her own understanding of what is to be in the park; try to tell a two-year old to sit down when it's so nice out! So, instead of sitting we lay down in the leaves and when that couldn't occupy her, Daddy had to bring all his muscle out and play airplane with her.

What a great day! Thank you guys, that was so much fun. Looking forward to photographing you again.

Trashing the Dress - in Costa Rica!

While down in Costa Rica recently for my wedding, I also had the opportunity to do a trash the dress session! This was very unlike my past experiences with this type of photography in Canada, since I now had the spectacular backdrop of beautiful warm ocean waves, tropical foliage, rugged cliffs, and an endless white beach to work with!

My subject also had a lot of fun, and was thankfully not inhibited by the idea of getting saltwater and sand in the wedding dress.

A Family of Crocs

My family came all the way from Hungary to Costa Rica to be present at my recent destination wedding ceremony. I was very happy to see them, and we definitely had a great time together during that week in the tropics. It was not long enough. But anyway, my family (mother, father, and sister) love to wear Crocs. Yes, I mean the oft-seen multi-coloured rubber shoes (though we also did see a few native Costa Rican crocodiles during the trip).

Anyway, there is apparently a Crocs photo contest back in Europe, and they wanted me to make use of my camera and the beautiful beach scenery to help them submit some entries when they got back home. We definitely had a great time doing it! Here are some of my favourite shots of my family in their Crocs:

The Best Wedding of My Life!

Some good news to confirm to you all, who may remember that last September, I mentioned that I got engaged. Well, at the end of this past March, I was finally married to the Love of my Life!

Obviously these are not photographs which I personally took, but I am happy to share them anyway:

It was a destination wedding, with the ceremony taking place in a lovely tropical location: Punta Leona, Costa Rica. I love doing wedding photography, but obviously, it would be quite difficult to take my own pictures that day, so we hired a professional photographer friend of mine from Winnipeg, Jeremy Hiebert, to come down and capture the occasion in all its splendour. As you can see from the above photos and the entry at his blog site, he did a great job of making beautiful images of me and my wonderful new hubby! Thanks, Jeremy!!!

But of course, even with all the hustle and bustle, I could not help but grab my camera before the wedding day got underway, and take a few images of my own:

Salvatore, What a Beautiful Name

Little Salvatore was only a couple of weeks old when his parents brought him to the studio. What a trooper. A little angel with big brown eyes. He could be a model, since he just fit perfectly into every position we put him in.

Congrats mom and dad, he is a sweet little boy!

Bonnie's Birthday at the Park

I had the privilege to help create a wonderful memory for a beautiful lady who was celebrating her 65th birthday with the company of her loved ones. I couldn't believe that she is 65!

Dressed in a snazzy red jacket and jeans, Bonny was ready to explore the hidden treasures of Hawrelak Park. Along with her daughter Reva as well as her son's family, we headed into a wonderful day and had a lot of fun. The only person that was missing was her love, Merv.

So, I decided to meet up with them the next day at the Leg. and take additional pictures with the complete family!

This was one of the most fun family photo shoots, and the memories won't escape my mind anytime soon. Thank you so much for all the laughter... and Bonnie, that goulash stew you brought me was quite delicious, and reminded me of my mother's stew.

Fall Session with the Prosser Family

September is one of my favorite months to do outside family portraits. With vibrant colors, and pleasant weather, everything just seems much more delightful.

The day I went out with the Prosser Family, I think I experienced one of busiest days that month, as I had a total three family photo-shoots in one day! However, the location which I had had in mind - the grounds of the Alberta Legislature - was loaded with photographers taking wedding and family pictures of hundreds of people.

So, due to overload at the Leg, we decided to go to the beautiful river valley park with the Prossers along with their two great doggies. We had so much fun, especially trying to get the baby and the dogs' attention in the same time. Well, we did managed to pull it all together and I think that the end results are amazing. Here are some of the shots from the day:

Do I See Double?

I had a chance to meet Cindy and Kristian back in April when Cindy was about 7 months pregnant with twins. She already had a big round belly and I was amazed that on some of the shots I could even see the way the babies were positioned! Those little infants give her some trouble by pushing her lung so we needed to take it slow and easy. Cindy did a very great job and Kristian is a great support for her:

Finally, the twins arrived, and after a couple of months of being in this world, their parents decided to take them to the first photoshoot of their life. It felt like they had decided to move in, as I never had seen so many accessories coming along with babies. Also, I had never photographed twins before either, and I was delighted to do it with such a cute bundle of joys. They seemed to have different personalities as well - for example, often when one was quiet the other one was crying.

Bridal Fair Winners

During the Edmonton Bridal Fair (which I wrote about earlier), I invited future brides visiting my booth to fill in ballots to enter into a draw to win a free photography session. On the ballot, they had to state their preferred type of photoshoot, whether an engagement session, bridal session, or trash-the-dress session before dropping it into the box. There was no obligation for them to have their main wedding ceremony photographs done by me, if their ticket turned out to be the winning entry.

Well, the interest was overwhelming, as afterward I counted more than 500 entries in the box! So, instead of just one winner, I decided to have three, so I kept drawing ballots until I found a bride for each of the three session types.

So, the winners are:

Free engagement session: Amber B. & Robert B., getting married in June 2010
Free bridal session: Jacqueline S. & Garret B., getting married in May 2010
Free trash-the-dress session: Brady K. & Dave R., getting married in August 2009

Baby Ilaria and Her Family

Blond, cute, and mischievous - sweet little angel Mackenzie showed up at my door back in August with her mommy, daddy, and little baby sister Ilaria. Our goal for this shoot was to take as many newborn picture as possible, and then concentrate on the little 2-year-old. I think we did well, and that the pictures couldn't have turned out better. It seems that Ilaria slept through most of the excitement, though!

Hot Day, Hot Mama...

The combination of all these things created a very fun and unforgettable photoshoot back in August on one of the hottest day of the year. My studio is on the top floor and the room temperature can sometimes make things a little warm. Well, it didn't bother Shannon, Zoe and Sawyer. They were troopers taking pictures, and we quickly become friends with Sawyer - he transformed from a shy little boy he into a playful rascal! Here is a short sampling of shots from our session:

Edmonton Bridal Fair 2009

This past weekend, I set up a booth at the annual Edmonton Bridal Fair. The place was packed! I enjoyed speaking with so many future brides (and grooms) about capturing all the memories of their special day with photographs. I had a lot of help from both my fiance and also my friend Alex, a newlywed bride whom I photographed this past summer.

Here are some images of the booth shortly after we set it up:

We had a number of my recent favourite wedding photographs on display, as well as a few sample wedding albums for people to flip through. People could also enter a draw to win a free portrait session (bridal, engagement, or trash the dress), and also a destination wedding photography package. And of course, this wouldn't be complete without a bowl of complimentary sweets. :)

A pleasant bonus was that out of the seven displays at the show that were in my category (photography), we received a prize for best display! (You can see the blue ribbon hanging on the display to the right of the yellow-coloured portrait.)

It was wonderful to see so much interest in wedding photography. I truly enjoy working to make a beautiful permanent record of a couple's most important day, and look forward to doing this over the coming year, and sharing the images with you here!

Paul & Joanna's Special Day

Paul and Joanna's unique marriage ceremony took place in a subterranean church, which was mostly illuminated by the light of their very obvious love for one another. During the ceremony, there was an amusing point when the ring-bearer - the bride's younger brother - substituted the wedding bands with the plastic rings from some pop bottles! The laughter which this generated only added to the great feelings and merriment from that day.

The last weekend of August was a lovely sunny day, so after the couple exchanged vows, we went to take photographs in the shadow of the pyramids! No, we didn't go to Egypt but to Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory. Looking at the pictures, I can totally understand how this sweet, fun, and playful couple can't help but smile! My best wishes to you both!

Wedding at Ross Haven

This past summer, I had the privilege to photograph one of my close friends' weddings. This wasn't your standard wedding, though! Following an early start to the day, watching the bride's mother making the wedding cake (with a sunflower theme!) and the girls (five sisters!) prepare, we went to Ross Haven Bible Camp, the site of the ceremony, where a hot day and many people awaited. After the boys arrived by speedboat, the wedding of Joëlle and Hans got underway, which ended up being a very touching and romantic ceremony, all officiated by her grandfather.

Trash the Dress

Wedding by the lake

Back in July, I photographed a very special wedding for my "adopted sister". Joanna and Troy are like family to me and they are an awesome couple. It was great to go back to Halifax and celebrate her big day with people I love. It was a very small and intimate wedding, lots of crying and smiling faces. The backyard ceremony was only for the immediate family, and of course me, until the reception where all the friends show up then the real party began...

I know that I have been neglecting my responsibilities as a blogger, and I haven't posted anything since August, but that's not because my work schedule is lacking, it's the opposite. God has blessed me with a lot of work and a great man by my side. How can I thank Him enough. I promise you will see some new stuff in a matter of days.

For now I just have some great news to announce:

1. I got engaged on Sept. 28. 2008! Wedding details will follow:

2. I was approved to be in the Edmonton Bridal Fair next January, meaning big responsibilities, and lots of work.

3. I start my exhibition on December 1st till January 30th at the University Hospital.

Keith the Comedian

Keith and I have known each other since last year. We spent about three months in the classroom together studying at the Microbusiness Training Centre. He is a great comedian who needed some new promotional headshots. After a couple of weeks of trying to fit our schedule, we finally managed to get together on a Wednesday evening. I thought Keith needed an urban setting to fit his style, so we headed to the heart of Edmonton.

The results were great:

Daina and Vimal's Wedding

On July 12th, Daina and Vimal finally said "I do" at the Greek Orthodox Church in Edmonton. It was the only day that week, or maybe the whole month, when we did not have a drop of rain coming down. Praise the Lord!

It was a large East Indian wedding, with a lot of colour and smiling faces. After we said good-bye to the 500 people that attended the wedding, the 12 of us headed out to the Alberta Museum grounds for a photoshoot. Well, is that ever a busy place! I know it was a mid-July Saturday, with a lot of weddings, but this many? About six to seven wedding photoshoots were going on in the park at the same time, and we really had to look to find a place where we didn't have another couple in the background. Sometimes they didn't care, and just walked right into our shots.

Despite all these things we had a great time, everybody was cooperative, and we did some fun photos. Vimal hit the jackpot! If I was a superstitious person, I would say that he will be lucky because he stepped into doggie-doo - certainly, I can say that he is already very lucky just by marrying this delightful young lady, Daina.

Alex and Cody's Wedding

It's unreal how much rain we have been having this summer - just crazy. But, it seems that the whole congregation was praying for a nice sunny day, and we got it! Although we had rain during the ceremony and rain during the reception (which almost seemed to be a hurricane), we had beautiful sunny weather in between for the pictures. How great is our God! Of course, the blessing didn't stop there, as we received a double rainbow for the perfect picture in the rain; I wish I had walked to the end of it, as I might have found myself a pot of gold.

Beautiful day, beautiful place, beautiful couple, what else do we need?

Alex and Cody, you guys are amazing. We had a great time at your wedding and I'm so glad I got to be a part of it.

Baby Sierra

A very pretty young lady come to see me a couple of weeks ago. Sierra's dad Mike is in Afghanistan right now, fighting for the freedom of its people. I didn't actually know this until Sierra's mom showed up with a huge Canadian flag that she wanted in the picture. We had a great time together - baby Sierra was a very good girl; dad, you can be proud! For the next photoshoot we would like you to be there with us!

Remember to support our troops! They are fighting for a great cause overseas, helping to stabilize and rebuild a long-suffering country, while bringing freedom and human rights to its populace. Thank you!

Kate and Matt's E. Session

Kate found me through the Hungarian community a couple of months ago. She and her fiancé Matt together make a sweet young couple with a lot of passion for one another! So, after a Thursday cancellation a few weeks ago due to rain, we headed to Edmonton's river valley on Saturday evening to take engagement portraits. And how great was that! Despite all the mosquito attacks, we spent a wonderful evening together in a place I have never been before. Thanks for taking me there and getting into that dirty water!

Sleep, Baby... sleep...

A while ago, I had a wonderful photo session with Lora and Devin. Lora was in her third trimester, and despite all the exercise she went through during the photoshoot she pulled through! A couple of weeks later, Baby Presley arrived and started her promising career as a model at day 10. She was such a darling; she slept so peacefully for the majority of the time, and her photographs reveal a perfect image of the sweet innocence of a newly-born child.

I hope you enjoy the images of this little angel as much as I enjoyed doing the photo-session!

My Trip to Ontario

Last month, I traveled to the city of Sudbury, Ontario. And of course, I wouldn't dare to leave home without my camera and lenses! There are some very pretty sites in Northern Ontario - there are many more rocks, hills, and bodies of water compared to the Edmonton area. I had a lot of fun there, met a lot of great people, and returned home with fond memories, as well as a lot of photos! Here is a small sampling:

I visited the scenic A.Y. Jackson Lookout, over by High Falls, a feature on the Onaping River:

There are streams everywhere, rushing in between mountainous areas. This site is along Sandcherry Creek:

I had so much fun with Alex and Cody a couple of evenings ago at the very different-looking Old Strathcona Area. These two are young and dynamic and fit to be models.

Cynthia and David's Wedding

Back in May, I received an e-mail from David saying that he needed a photographer for his upcoming wedding... the thing was, him and his fiancee were getting married in just one week! Wow, that was pretty close! Fortunately, I had no major plans that weekend, so I took on their wedding. We met three days before their big day to go through some details and I was very pleased how nice they were; I knew right away that it would be a great day for all of us.

My boyfriend did not need much convincing - he was quite happy to help me that day (in fact, it was his first wedding as an assistant) and we headed to the beautiful Devonian Garden, which is not too far from Edmonton. What a day! With a bright sun in a blue sky, a picturesque Japanese garden, and most importantly, a beautiful couple, what else could we possibly need?

Thanks so much for having us photograph your wedding, capturing memories for your lifetimes! You two were a lot of fun, especially after everybody left, when we really got to try a number of original ideas in the little flower garden area near the grove of trees and the pond.

The Gallagher Family

On a beautiful June day a few weeks ago, I went out to the foresty rural outskirts of Edmonton, to do an outdoor family portrait session. The Gallaghers are a lovely couple, with a pair of sweet children - Matea and Liam - to round out the family. Although we had sunlight, I think the cute smiles of those kids lit up the photos the most! I had a lot of ideas in mind prepared for portrait compositions, but their rustic property provided a lot of opportunities for impromptu, spontaneous photo ideas. As the sampling below shows, everyone got into it, with some gorgeous grins to showcase this family's happiness:

I definitely had a great time doing this photo session. It was such a comfortable atmosphere for doing photos, and it's very rewarding when the finished product comes out so well. Thank you to the Gallaghers for helping make it such a successful time!

Daina and Vimal's E. Session

A couple of Sundays ago we were blessed to spend some time doing an engagement session at the picturesque grounds of the Alberta Legislature with a lovely couple, Daina and Vimal. Their wedding is just a couple of weeks away, and they were both in high gear to make the best out of that beautiful evening as the sun was setting (which, incidentally, gave us perfect light for our photoshoot).

We had so much fun, I just can't get over Daina's sense of humor, and of course her amazing eyes, plus Vimal was a true gentleman in both attitude and attire. I'm very happy how well the images turned out, and I can't wait to show a sampling of them, so don't waste any time - check them out for yourself...

Our Trip to Drumheller

Last week, my boyfriend and I went to visit Drumheller, Alberta. There were many interesting sites in the surrounding landscape, known as the "badlands" whose hilly features are distinctly different from the typical endlessly flat prairie horizons of Alberta:

Stormy clouds did not dampen our spirits, but provided photo-opportunities instead:

The area is known for its fascinating geological formations known as hoodoos:

There is also quite a coal mining history around here. At the former site of Atlas Coal Mine, historical remnants include this headframe:

Another local curiosity is this extremely small local church, known as "Little Church". Very tiny. It has room for six within, including one preacher:

Then there was a historical suspension bridge to see, which once brought coal miners and ore to and from Star Mine.

And for this same site, a little enhancement went a long way:

Who would have thought traversing the Red Deer River would be so interesting?

A Professional's Photography

Welcome to my blog, and its very first post! I decided that this would be a great forum to share some short stories and highlights from my various photographic exploits. I own my own professional photography business, and regularly work to "capture the moment" at Edmonton-area weddings, portrait sessions, area daycares, and many other situations (for more detailed background about my business and a wide sampling of work I have done, please visit my official home page: Helga Himer Photography Co.).

Apart from my business, it goes without saying that I have a personal love for photography, and rarely go anywhere without a camera, even if I'm not doing an official photo-shoot! With my own personal sense of artistic license, I like to capture interesting landscapes, people, and situations, and then sometimes enhance them with Photoshop. And now, with this blog, I can share the bounty of digital photographs I make with the rest of the world (or at least, anyone with access to the Internet).
